Bobbi Kristina Brown’s ex and Whitney Houston’s ‘Off the Record Adopted Son’ Nick Gordon Dies Aged 30 from Suspected Overdose.
Nick Gordon is the music legend Whitney Houston’s undocumented adopted son who revealed his romance publicly with Houston’s daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, shortly after Houston’s death. Gordon was only 12 years old when he was taken under her wing and raised together with Bobbi Kristina. The legendary singer treated Gordon like a son. He referred to Whitney as ‘mom’ and called Bobbi Kristina as ‘Lil sis’.
In January 2015, at the age of 22, Bobbi Kristina was found unresponsive in a bathtub at the Atlanta home by Gordon and another friend. Investigators were unable to determine exactly how she died but her family blamed Gordon of contributing to her death by giving a toxic mixture before putting her face down in the water and physically abused her. Not only Gordon was accused of violence against Bobbi Kristina, they claimed that Gordon stealing money she had inherited by positioning himself as her boyfriend. Gordon’s lawyers said the allegations were slanderous and meritless. Gordon was never charged in the case but he was found responsible in Bobbi Kristina Brown wrongful death lawsuit and ordered to pay $36 million but the judge awarded damages of $36,250,000 to the conservator of the Brown estate and won by default because Gordon had repeatedly failed to meet deadlines in the lawsuit. The ruling derived from a civil lawsuit Bobbi Kristina Brown’s rep filed against Nick Gordon, it was not criminal proceedings.
Gordon, 30, died from a suspected overdose on New Year’s Day. He had black liquid coming from his mouth before paramedics arrived. He reportedly had a series of heart attacks and was rushed into intensive care in Florida but doctors were unable to revive him.
Joe Habachy, Gordon’s lawyer, released a statement following Gordon’s death and did not provide details surrounding the cause of death but alluded that Gordon had been working hard to maintain his sobriety.
“My heart is heavy today after learning that my long-time client Nick Gordon died at the young age of thirty. While I cannot speak to the specific circumstances of his death, I can say that it’s been truly heartbreaking to have witnessed first hand the total devastation that drug addiction has wreaked upon a group of young friends, all of whom were loved and had immense potential”.
“Despite all of the incredible challenges Nick faced over the last few years I can honestly say that he worked hard to hold his head up and stay sober and that he genuinely wanted a happy healthy life with his family more than anything else. My heart goes out to the family and friends Nick leaves behind and to any other families dealing with the losses and heartache caused by drugs.”
Gordon’s brother, Junior Walker, mourned his death in a Facebook post, writing, “God why did I have to lose my brother on New Years.”
“All I can do is cry.”
